Beach Girl Devotions…Hard Waves
The boys ran into the ocean full speed ahead assuming the water was calm like the previous day. Instead of the calm, gentle waves; hard waves crashed into their little bodies and knocked them down. One day they were floating over the swells and the next day the bitter salt water slap them in the face. It seems life has a way of catching us off guard and knocking us to the ground. One day we are sailing careless and free, and then unexpectantly our boat capsizes.
Hard waves can come in many forms from a job loss to a death of a loved. These waves are apart of life, but you never know when it will happen to you. The wind speed affects the ocean’s waves, and with helpful weather apps we can determine hard wave days. Unfortunately, there’s not an app to alert us when troubled seas are on the horizon in our lives, but we do have an anchor (our faith in God) to steady us when we find ourselves facing the eye of the storm.
Jesus became quite acquainted with the sea as he traveled with his disciplines who were fisherman by trade. His disciples understood the changing of the tides, and the best time to catch fish. They probably looked at the clouds numerous times to discern if a storm was approaching, but one day the storm came suddenly. It was actually a squall, and have I learned that a squall (a sudden, sharp increase in wind speed) more accurately describes uncertain times in our life.
While it may seem uncertain and dark to us, Jesus already knows our story.
Read: Luke 8:22-25
The part of this story that lingers with me, is when Jesus asks, “Where is your faith?” It’s not the squall that we should be preparing for, but our faith. Our faith in God to calm the squall and the storms is our anchor and hope that the clouds will roll over and the sun will shine.
- What waves, squalls or storms are causing you to sink?
Understanding the waves
James 1:6, “When you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”
Ephesians 4:14-15, “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
Matthew 8:27, “The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him.'”
2. Is there a particular wave holding you back?
John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Psalm 23:4, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 126:6, “Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.”
Psalm 34:4, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.”
3. In what ways is God your anchor?
