Free Cone Day & A Cause
Last year was the first time we participated in the Free Cone Day event. My friend and I loaded up all the neighborhood kids in our SUV’s and drove to our local Dairy Queen Grill & Chill. It was a warm spring day, and the kids were tracked-out of school (year-round school lingo). They happily chatted and laughed in the back seat while I enjoyed the warm breeze flowing through the sun roof. Spring was here, and we were all excited to celebrate with a cold ice cream cone.
In the midst of our happiness, I couldn’t help, but wonder about the children and their families at Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center that were awaiting another cancer treatment or answers. You see, Free Cone Day at Triangle Area Dairy Queen’s are more than a spring celebration; it’s a day set aside to partner with the community and raise funds for an important cause. There is no requirement to donate, but I like teaching my children the importance of giving back. Two SUV’s filled with 10 kids+ 2 moms = 12 small vanilla soft-serve cones with a signature curl on top for free is a big treat. Not having to be in the hospital is a blessing. Giving back and offering hope to kids and their families is priceless.
Throughout the past 10 years, Triangle Area Dairy Queen’s have raised over $120,000 for the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital (Duke) that is used for research, care and support programs for children and their families.
