Teach Them Young
Last night my 3-year-old son, Liam was having a difficult time falling to sleep. I allowed him to come in my bed and snuggle with me. He quietly laid there holding his brown teddy bear. His blue eyes looking at me, as if he were waiting on something. I asked him if he wanted me to sing him a song. The animal song, I suggested. “Jesus,” he whispered back like he knew a special secret. Since Liam was a baby, I have been singing him Jesus Loves Me before bed. It warmed my heart knowing that was his song of choice. The way his eyes lit up and his face smiled when he quietly suggested the song made we realize what Jesus meant when He said that we must come to Him like a little child (Matthew 18:3).

Singing, reading and teaching our children about God is important, so it’s nice to have books like the Lucado Treasury of Bedtime Prayers. The talented writer Max Lucado who creatively weaves God’s Word into our familiar thoughts and phrases partnered with his wife, Denalyn and compiled Bible verses, prayers and poems into a beautiful treasury book for children. They also wrote several of the prayers and poems in the book.
The Bedtime description in the title is a little misleading because this book has prayers for morning, noon and night. Children will love hearing you read about God’s love, blessings, protection and joy, but they will also enjoy turning the brightly colored pages and studying the detailed illustrations.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it (Proverbs 22:6). When you teach your children early about the power of prayer, they will learn that they can put their trust in Jesus and can rely on Him. Child-like problems may seem trivial, but when they are adults they will be glad you instilled this wisdom into their lives.
